Chairside Dentistry: From the Early Days to Now

When I first entered the world of chairside CAD/CAM in 2010, I was surprised by how few dentists had adopted what seemed like a logical advancement. On paper, it made sense: scan, design, and mill a restoration in one appointment, so much easier for the patient and practice. But in practice, this is not how it rolled.

The technology was still young. Scanning required titanium dioxide sprays, which patients often licked off mid-appointment. Dentists grew frustrated, dental representatives broke into cold sweats, and only the most meticulous clinicians—those who lived by the use of rubber dams whilst prepping—prospered. The rest? They gave up or struggled through until new scanners arrived, but not quickly enough.

Today, that is a different world. Chairside is cool. Graduate Dentists expect it and no longer argue the merit of antiquated analogue impression taking. The battle-hardened who endured the early days shake their heads at the lightning speeds, the increasing array of scanners that they could only dream of, whilst the patient licked away the meticulously prepared powder. It’s an incredible time for tech, not just in dentistry, everywhere.

RAYMILL C and supporting technologies

The legacy chairside systems remain excellent and have come a long way from the early days. But not every dentist needs—or wants—an all-in-one proprietary system. You likely already own an intraoral scanner and are seeking a cost-effective pathway into chairside CAD/CAM. That’s where new options come in.

At 5xDental, we can partner with you for your future Chairside restorative needs. Open workflows are now an advantage. Yes, a solution that can be managed from one manufacturer is excellent, and at 5xDental, we have that with the Ray IOS2. D+Dental Suite and Raymill C offer. However, ground-up solutions now need to accommodate your choice of scanner or perhaps what you have inherited, plus a range of design solutions, including AI, Chairside and High Aesthetics.

The Raymill C can mill a broad range of industry-leading materials using the standard block holder. All your favourites are included. Further, RAYZir FS block is a fully Sintered Zirconia option that eliminates the need for a sintering furnace in-house. This material can be finished by either polishing or with a standard glaze furnace.
